The 2009 CFDA Awards: An Eye Towards the Future
by Ian L.

It seems like only yesterday, at least to this editor, that designers Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs were considered the new kids on the block and working hard to gain recognition and acceptance from their peers in the industry. Now Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs are honored, elder statesmen in fashion and as if any further proof were needed for their elevated status, the CFDA has awarded Anna Sui the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award and Marc Jacobs the International Award for his amazing work with Louis Vuitton. Outside of a win by Ralph Lauren of the newly established CFDA Popular Vote, the rest of the top awards winners were a who's who of the next generation of fashion superstars.

Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte won the much coveted Designer of the Year Award for Womenswear, Italo Zucchellia for Calvin Klein and Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders both tied for Menswear Designer of the Year and Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for  Proenza Schouler won the Accessory Designer of the Year award. The Swarovski Awards for emerging talents went to Tim Hamilton for Menswear, Justin Guinta for Accessory, and Alexander Wang for Womenswear.
Up to 60 models, the best of the emerging talents, posed on the steps to the entrance of Alice Tully Hall and greeted guests upon arrival to the 2009 CFDA Awards. This display was also a preview of Fashion Week's move to Lincoln Center in 2010.
Though the awards winners are not yet household names, they have the respect of their peers and hopefully in time they will achieve the same level of success as the big names in the industry. Least we forget, lines such as Rodarte, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang are barley a decade in existence.

The CFDA also honored the new First Lady of fashion, Michelle Obama. Though she was not in attendance, the First Lady won the Board of Director's Special Tribute Award for her support of talented and emerging American designers such as Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo.

In a preview of New York Fashion Week's upcoming move to Lincoln Center in 2010, this year's CFDA Awards included a presentation of 60 models dressed in fashions by Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, and Narciso Rodriguez on the steps at the entrance of Alice Tully Hall. The models shown were some of the industry's best emerging talents. Inside, guests were treated a special fashion show presentation of Anna Sui's latest collection featuring the top names in the modeling industry.
