I've had the pleasure of meeting Yuna Yang during her all too brief time living in Cambridge. After seeing her work at a local exhibition on Newbury St. it was obvious that she had a great deal of skill in fashion design. Even though Yuna is just staring out as a designer, she's had a world full of experiences.
Yuna Yang is a global traveller and her education in fashion spans many countries. Her first degree came from her home in Seoul, South Korea. She then moved to Milan for a course at Instituto Marangoni where she was recognized by designer Alverio Martini. Yuna's next stop was at London where she earned a BA in fashion design at Central Saint Martins. In London, she received an opportunity to work with designer Clements Ribeiro. After a few years living in Cambridge Massachusetts, Yuna has taken the next step by moving to New York and officially launching her self-named, ready-to-wear women's label.
The Yuna Yang women's collection is a couture quality, ready-to-wear line that is made entirely in Manhattan. Designer Yuna Yang draws upon her many travels and her own personal artistic aesthetic to develop a unique look for the label. Yuna chose the Arario Gallery as the setting for her first New York presentation. It was shown at the start of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The Fall 2010 presentation for Yuna Yang was inspired by the style of 1920's silent film star, Louise Brooks. Louise had a liberated and innovative spirit and her style was a reflection of that. The collection is a blend of masculine and feminine lines. Suits and separates are filled with lots of innovative details. The dresses are in bold artistic prints and colors. It's not hard to imagine Louise herself wearing these highly creative yet charmingly chic fashions in both her time and in ours.
