The Boston Symphony Orchestra presents: Project Tchaikovsky
by Ian Larraga

Following the success of last year's fashion competition Project Mozart, the BSO is back this year with a new competition titled Project Tchaikovsky.

The new program adhered to last year's system of rules and judging. Nine students from various fashion schools from around New England were chosen as finalist for the new show. The students were asked to listen to and interpret the music of Tchaikovsky into their own unique designs.

The nine finalists were Kinda Touma from the School of Fashion Design in Boston,

Melissa Higgins and Fallon Coster from Lasell College, Naiomi Inoa and Cam Yen Le from Mount Ida College, Kelly Brown, Rain Deleslie and Samira Vargus from Mass Art and finally Madeline Hay from the Rhode Island School of Design.

The special judges for this year included local designers Nara Paz and Michael De Paulo, editor-in-chief of Fashion Boston Alexandra Hall, Mary Noblie King from the Chanel boutique in Boston, and making her return from judging last year's competition, BSO violinist Wendy Putnam. Emmy Award winner and WGBH art reporter for the program "Greater Boston" Jared Bowen, was the show's special emcee.

The judges chose the overall winner on the categories of demonstrated skills, meeting design specifications, and aesthetic and overall quality of work. To that end, the judges chose Mass Art student Rain Deleslie as the overall winner. Rain's dress featured a two-way zipper on a checkered bodice with a long tiered, flounce skirt. The inspiration for the dress came from Tchaikosky's Serenade for Strings in C Major.

Just like last year's competion, BSO patron's got the chance to vote for their own favorite design. Between intermissions of the evening's Tchaikovsky Concert, patrons voted by paper ballot as the models and student designers posed at various locations throughout Symphony Hall. The Patron's Favorite Award went to Fallon Coster from Lasell College. Fallon's dress of gold silk and black lace included crystal beading at the hem and sides and was inspired by the 1812 Overture.

Both winners received many prizes but the overall winner gets a luxury leather handbag from Terrida and will be featured in the June issue of Boston Magazine. Boston Magazine is a major supporter of all the BSO Project competitions. Other supporters include makeup artist Debra Macki, Brandon Keith Hair Salon and event coordinator/photographer William Downey of Planet617 Photography.
