Gretta Monahan hosts
RUNWAY: A Night of Style and Fashion to Benefit The Faulkner Sagoff Center

by Ian L.

The Annual Faulkner Sagoff Gala has once again arrived. The well known local gala fundraiser for the Faulkner Sagoff Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center has changed from seasons past. This year's gala became an enormous event thanks to the involvement of celebrity Gretta Monahan, owner of Grettacole Salons and Grettaluxe Boutiques, the style expert on the Rachel Ray Show and the co-star of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style on Bravo.

Gretta has long been a strong supporter of local cancer charities. Her involvement transformed the usual gala runway show into the first ever Runway competition where students from the School of Fashion Design in Boston would have their graduate collections judged for prizes.

The Runway Gala was presented and sponsored by Suffolk Healthcare, a division of the Suffolk Construction Company and the event was beautifully and lavishly designed and produced by Rafanelli Events in the Rose Kennedy Ballroom of The InterContinental Hotel in Boston.

For the Runway competition, student designers Jessica Lee, Kae Bae, Victoria Dominguez, Kira McClellan and Kelly Higgins were judged by two Project Runway alums who are no strangers when it comes to competition, Emmet McCarthy and Kevin Christiana. Also judging were two of our own local celebs, Lisa Pierpont of Boldfacers.com and Tonya Chen Mezrich of Style Boston.

The winner of this year's Runway contest, Jessica Lee (above) will join Gretta Monahan at the upcoming 2010 New York Fashion Week to see a few shows.

The Grand Prize winner of Runway was Jessica Lee. She won a trip to New York Fashion Week with Gretta Monahan where she'll meet with designers and watch a few shows up close. This will be an excellent learning opportunity for the young designer to see the ins and outs of a top level show. Guests at the event chose their own winner for the People's Choice award. That award went to Kelly Higgins. For winning, Kelly will have her clothing displayed and sold at a Grettaluxe boutique plus she'll receive a few other prizes.

Aside from the Runway competition, the Gala also honored Men with Heart, a men's group made up of the brothers, husbands and sons of the women diagnosed with cancer. They are there to support their loved ones in their hour of need and to let them know that they are not alone in their fight with cancer. The men's group has done their part by raising awareness and funds though various cancer walks. For the evening, the men walked the runway, modeling their trademarked yellow shirts and Men with Heart Logo.
The Runway Gala was a smashing success for everyone involved and the fun-filled live auction raised some much need funds for the Faulkner Sagoff Center. Expect next year's program to be just as fabulous and I encourage anyone who love's fashion and who love's to support cancer charities to not miss next year's show.
