New York Fashion Week Exclusive
M.MODA.NY:
A Presentation of Madrid's Best Designers
by Ian L.

It's not that often that we here in the States are exposed to the works of Spanish designers. When I received an invitation to Project 4 Eyes, a special fashion installation of four of Madrid's best designers, I jumped a the chance. I was eager to go.

Held at the New York Public Library near the Bryant Park tents during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, guests and media were treated to a preview (about 10 outfits each) of the works of designers Ana Gonzalez for Ana Locking, Carmen March, Duyos and Juanjo Oliva, while a special film of models wearing the featured outfits, shot in High Definition at a thousand frames per second, played on a giant screen in the backgroud.

The small sampling of works on display are from each designer's latest Spring 2010 collections. Their full collections will be showcased in the upcoming Cibeles Fashion Week in Madrid. This September, Cibeles Fashion Week will celebrate its 50th edition.

I found the work of the Madrid designers to be very eye catching. They make great use of prints and colors and they combine them well with architectural shapes. I saw quite a few cocktail dresses that can't help but stand out and make you take notice.

Other Spanish designers, Toni Fransec and Joaquin Trias, were not at the installation but instead showed their collections at the Bryant Park tents to large crowds. Spanish designers are steadily making their presence felt in New York Fashion Week as well as other fashion weeks worldwide and I'm looking forward to seeing their recognition grow.
