Nirva Derbekyan presents:
Armenian Odyssey, a Spring 2010 Collection at Mizu Salon

by Ian L.

Mizu Salon was very intriguing place to hold a fashion show. The pristine white walls with numerous arches gave the illusion of depth, the end of the room seemed a great distance away. The chairs and salon stations were a matching white. The look of the overall design was very modern, European and minimalist.

This was the setting for Nirva's Spring 2010 collection; a lively, colorful, and culturally inspired collection that was in sharp contrast with its surroundings. The contrast further highlighted and enhanced her selections and made them the full focus of one's view.

Nirva's latest collection was inspired greatly by her Armenian heritage. She made her first visit to Armenia in the spring of this year. The shapes of the dresses, the colors and the embellished, decorative fabrics are all reflections of Nirva's feelings during her time there.

As with all of Nirva's designs which incorporates hand beading, draping and fabric manipulation to a subtle degree, the young designer was especially proud of the of the final dress shown on the runway. The silver organza, hand draped and beaded dress came with a lot of thought and best represents Nirva's Armenian journey.

A few of my personal favorites from the collection included the coral colored dress with matching hood and contrasting, wide black belt and the grey halter top, floor length dress with the white, embroidered sash.

Owner of Mizu Salon, Elan Sassoon, was more than happy to host Nirva's fashion show. Charles Maksou styled the models' hair and Jeannie Vincent did makeup. Jessica Lynn, owner of Leokadia shoes on Newbury St. not only provided the chic footwear, but she also played a big part in the show's production.

Designs by Nirva are available at Stil boutique in Chestnut Hill, Matsu on Newbury St. and from Nirva's own atelier in Lexington, Massachusetts.
