into a special two day event starting with seminars by Patricia Hambrick, the CMO of Bag Borrow or Steal (now known as Avelle), along with a speaker panel of fashion entrepreneurs which includes Heatherjean MacNeil of Proxy Apparel and Fashion with Impact, Alice Miles of Stilista, Stacey Santo of Rulala.com and Kelly Leisman of Gretta Luxe and finally a fashion show fundraiser for Dress for Success.
The seminars were free and open to the public but they also served to help educate and provide networking contacts for the Boston University student community in the exciting fields of Fashion and Retail, This ultimately helps to empower the BU community and the empowerment of students is a very important mandate of the BU Entrepreneurs Club.
The main event, the Style Matters Fashion Show and Fundraiser was a of dream of Ana's. With the help of Aileen Benson of Style Fashion Productions, that dream became a reality. Aileen donated her time to provided runway training for the mostly BU students that served as volunteer models as well as consultation in other aspects of the show.
Clothing was happily provided by the stylish Lit Boutique on Newbury Street and by local favorite designer Nirva Derbekyan. Nirva took this opportunity to showcase her new Spring 2009 collection that was inspired by recent trips to beaches and the sea. Lit Boutique also showcased the latest Spring offerings from the many designer labels that they carry.
Hair and makeup was provided by the new Philipostyle Hair Salon that just opened up on Bolyston St. in Boston. Funkalicious music was provided by Soul Clap.
To Ana's surprise, other sponsors came on board and the fashion show took a life of its own. The show sold out and 100% of the proceeds went to Dress for Success. Ana chose the charity because she couldn't think of a better way to empower women through fashion especially in this economic environment where many are loosing jobs.
The Dress for Success organization provides a great deal of support for disadvantaged women. They provide professional attire, a support network and career development tools to women so that they may gain economic independence and develop successful lives.
The show was a success for all those that attended and participated. Ana hopes that the incoming BU Entrepreneurs Club officers will continue the Style Matters venue in future projects. It has the potential to become a great tradition and a well recognized brand.
