Fashionably Late at The Liberty Hotel Presents:
Samuel Vartan
Fall 2010 Collection Preview
by Ian L.

If you still haven't checked out the new weekly fashion venue at the Liberty Hotel titled Fashionably Late, then you're missing out. Fashionably Late features not only local designers and unique retailers from Boston and New England but on rare occasions, a well known New York designer or two (think Cynthia Rowely and Carmen Marc Valvo in person).

Designer Samuel Vartan was thrilled to be featured and he delighted the capacity filled crowd with an early preview

of his Fall 2010 collection. That's not a typo. Where other designers in Boston are set to show their Fall 2009 collections and New York designers have just shown Spring 2010, Samuel has for the most part already completed Fall of 2010. He's that far ahead.

Samuel doesn't struggle with designing collections. He doesn't concern himself too deeply with trends. He has a winning formula that he stays with and he designs what he likes. For Fall and Winter collections, he does a lot of long black coats in velvet and leather. The long coat is a staple in Samuel's work. He also does a lot of body conscious dresses in various materials such as sequin or beaded lace, velvet, vinyl and leather.

Samuel's look is heavily influenced by his younger days as a member of a Montreal rock band. The scene back then was a mix or rock and goth. Samuel also has a love for film noir.  It's no surprise then that elements from the genres or rock, goth and noir will appear often in his designs.

One of Samuel's favorite pieces that he showed at The Liberty was a silver and grey paneled sequined gown. It's also one of his most expensive pieces to date, costing anywhere from three to four thousand dollars. What we didn't get to see at the preview was Samuel's line of winter coats. The coats are wool and cashmere and some have leather trim. At his Norwood studio, he showed me an interesting faux fur fabric that he hopes to eventually design a new coat with and to add to the Fall 2010 collection. Samuel also does a fine line of menswear that I hope to one day see on the runway.

Co-hosting the show with Samuel was Elan Sassoon. Elan is the owner of Mizu Salons in Boston and New York. Mizu often does the hair for the models during the various Fashionably Late shows, led by stylist Charles Maksou. Elan and Mizu have some very exciting projects ahead in the world of fashion that I can't discuss yet but we'll know more soon by next Spring.

Providing jewelry and accessories for the show was a good friend of Samuel's, designer Richard Bali Berberian of Elyse Fine Jewelers located in Reading MA.

Samuel truly enjoyed his experience with Fashionably Late at The Liberty Hotel and he hopes to do more shows with them in the future. Providence will also get a chance to see the designs of Samuel Vartan  when he headlines the first ever Providence Style Week, set to premiere in the late summer of 2010.
